Burlap

Home/Home/Sewing & Quilting/Fabric/Burlap

Burlap, also known as jute or hessian depending on where in the world you are, is a dense, woven fabric made from the skin of the jute plant or sisal fibres. Historically produced as a course fabric for use as shipping bags (think of those big sacks you see coffee beans shipping in) and other utilitarian purposes, burlap is increasingly found in a refined, "premium" state for use in interior design applications such as bags, cushion covers, table runners and curtains, where a more standardised appearance is appreciated. Golden brown in its natural state, burlap can also be dyed allowing for a wide range of colour choices.
